Vic Darchinyan (32-2-1) at the end of the first round tried to turn up the pace with a powerful exchange of punches, but it is 3 minutes later that Darchinyan knocked Rojas out with a powerful left punch. Review: 2009-04-04, Edwin Valero (24-0-0) had won the WBA World super featherweight title against Vicente Mosquera (one of the best boxing fights of 2006), and after having defended it four times, he tried in 2009 to win the vacant WBC lightweight title. His opponent was Antonio Pitalua (46-3-0), very dangerous Colombian boxer since he had won by knockout 40 times! In fact at the end of the first round Pitalua surprised Valero with a nice right hook, but “El Inca” Valero in the first 49 seconds of the second round knocked down Pitalua three times and won the fight: twenty-fifth KO out of 25 fighting. Review: 2009-04-04, the fight between Vicente Escobedo and Carlos Hernandez was one of the best boxing fights of 2009. Vicente Escobedo (19-1-0) had just beaten the undefeated Dominic Salcido (in 2008), and before trying to win a world title he needed to face some boxer more experienced than him: Carlos Hernandez (43-7-1). The youngest Escobedo defeated Hernandez by unanimous decision after ten round of action (this was also the last fight of Carlos “El Famoso” Hernandez). Watch the video!
Review: 2011-06-04, Kessle returns to battle after more than a year against Mehdi Bouadla (former IBF International super middleweight champion) and the fight is exciting, with four knockdowns: four stars. Mikkel Kessler entered the fight with a record of 44-2-0 while Mehdi Bouadla had a record of 22-3-0. Kessler vs Bouadla is valid for the vacant WBO European super middleweight title. Watch the video!
Review: 2009-04-25, Juan Manuel Lopez (24-0-0) had won only two fighting by points in his career and even when he conquered the WBO super bantamweight title (in 2008) against Daniel Ponce de Leon, the Puerto Rican won by knockout (in the first round). In this fight he defended his WBO belt for the third time, and his opponent was Gerry Penalosa (54-6-2), who was already world champion in the bantamweight division. Even this time, “Juanma” Lopez won the match before the final bell, throwing 1020 punches in 10 rounds! Watch the video!
Review: 2009-11-14, one of the headlines of this boxing event was “Old school warriors, modern day heros”, and we are fully agreed that Pacquiao and Cotto are two warriors and heros, as they demonstrated in this fight. Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2), having won the IBO light welterweight title versus Ricky Hatton (another great fight of 2009), tried to win the 7th title in seven different weight classes. His opponent this time was Miguel Angel Cotto (34-1-0) that, for the second time, defended his WBO welterweight title. Even in the face of one of the strongest boxers in recent years as Cotto, Pacquiao dominated him in one of the best boxing fights of 2009. Watch the video!
Review: 2009-05-09, Marco Huck (24-1-0) won the EBU (European) cruiserweight title against Jean Marc Monrose in 2008 and, in 2009, defended his title for the third time against Vitaliy Rusal (23-0-0), undefeated Ukrainian boxer who fought for the first time out of his homeland. In the fifth round, the referee Guido Cavalleri counted Rusal after a fierce action of Huck and then, after a few seconds, suspended the fight: impressive victory of Marco “Kapt’n” Huck. Review: 2009-05-27, Daniel Geale (21-0-0) had won the IBO middleweight title versus Daniel Dawson (in 2007) and he had to defend it against the experienced Anthony Mundine (35-3-0). Even if they came from the same country, the fight turned in an exciting battle, Mundine defeated Geale by split decision after a very balancd match (first defeat for Daniel Geale). Watch the video!
Review: 2009-08-15, Nonito Donaire (21-1-0) had won, in 2007, the IBF and IBO flyweight titles against Vic Darchinyan, and after having successfully defended three times, he wanted to win also the interim WBA World super flyweight title. His opponent was Rafael Concepcion (13-3-1), who had already won this title in 2008 against AJ Banal, but then he lost it facing Jorge Arce. “El Torito” Concepcion, in this fight, was more aggressive and threw more punches than the Philippine, but Donaire was much more accurate and won the match. Review: 2009-05-02, the fight between Manny Pacquiao (48-3-2) and Ricky Hatton (45-1-0) lasted only 2 rounds, but it were six minutes very exciting. Hatton, after losing against Floyd Mayweather Jr (in 2007), trying to win the welterweight title, had returned in his light welterweight division winning the IBO‘s belt versus Juan Lazcano (in 2008). So Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton defended his title against Manny Pacquiao who tried to win a world title in the light welterweight category, even though he had just fought and won against Oscar De La Hoya at the welterweight limit. Pacquiao knocked down Hatton two times in the first round and knocked him out at the end of the second round, surely one of the best KO of 2009. (After this fight Hatton retired). Watch the video!
