5 Star RatingReview by AllTheBestFights.com: 2015-05-09, Saul Alvarez vs James Kirkland was not a boxing fight, it was a war in which both fighters exchanged shot for shot from the first round and thanks also to an impressive finish it gets five stars! We have, finally, the first candidate for the 2015 Boxing Fight of the Year!

The former Wbc and Wba super-Ww champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez entered this fight with a professional boxing record of 44-1-1 (31 knockouts) and he is ranked as the No.1 super welterweight in the world. He suffered his only defeat in 2013 when he faced Floyd Mayweather Jr (=Mayweather vs Alvarez); after losing he came back to win beating Alfredo Angulo (=Alvarez vs Angulo) and Erislandy Lara (=Alvarez vs Lara).
His opponent, James Kirkland, has an official record of 32-1-0 (28 KOs=87%) but he is not ranked as he hasn’t fought since December 7, 2013 when he defeated Glen Tapia (=Kirkland vs Tapia). Kirkland’s only loss occurred in 2011 against Nobuhiro Ishida (=Ishida vs Kirkland). Alvarez vs Kirkland is the main event of the evening. Watch the video and rate this fight!

  1. Could have easily folded under the assault by Kirkland but he closed the show like the young champion he is. This fight gave Action that substituted for the anti-action provided by 48-0. If your a champ finish that fight with an exlaimation mark. Canelo!

  2. Excellent fight, excellent knock outs. In just three rounds a good fighter was almost destroyed but another much better boxer. Canelo you are great.

    • Mayweather-Alvarez II would be the biggest paycheck for Mayweather, after his fight vs Pacquiao. Since Mayweather is all about money and he scored and easy MD in their first fight, I believe he will be willing to take the “risk”. Fingers crossed! Dedos cruzados! Je me croise les doigts! :P

      • I had to change UD for MD in my previous post because I forgot CJ Ross was a judge on that fight…

      • I hope you are right. it will be very nice and interesting to watch this match. Mantengamos los dedos cruzados :-)

  3. 5 STARS?!
Maybe some of you see this fight as if it was Hagler-Hearns… but to me it’s more like Tyson-McNeely!

  4. the fight of the century was not the fight between the runner and the invalid, it is going to be a true fight between two great boxers Canelo and GGG: bring it on and get some genuine credibility back into boxing

  5. GGG should be the next fight for Canelo if they dont get it on it would bebecause 48-0 wants a rematch with Canelo or a real challenge against GGG. Its really all up to mr 48-0. He determines kind of where these 2 fighters will be by september that is GGG and Canelo.

  6. Nice to watch this fight again as a warm-up to Canelo-Cotto :) From seeing this, I give a very low chance to Cotto.

    • Matt, this was an excellent fight with a very impressive Canelo indeed. I fully agree with you. As I said before in one of my comments, Cotto would be thinking in retirement after this fight.

  7. Sin dudas un nombre mas en el record de Alvarez,en una pelea, que definio muy bien.
Pelea corta, pero muy violenta, con una definicion que espero halla marcado el fin de Kirklan como boxeador.Saludos
