Buakaw lost the rematch with Yi Long in 2016 (controversial decision, Buakaw vs Yi Long 2) but then he has won seven bouts beating Sergey Kulyaba (Buakaw vs Kulyaba), Marouan Toutouh (Buakaw vs Toutouh) and Nayanesh Ayman in his last three (Buakaw Banchamek vs Nayanesh Ayman).
His opponent, the former Iska and current Enfusion world champion Jonay Risco, has an official record of 57-14-1 (6 knockouts) but he comes off three consecutive losses, with Davit Kiria, Yassin Baitar and Redouan Laarkoubi; his last victory was against Tayfun Ozcan at the beginning of 2017.
