Review: 2008-09-15, going to Japan and winning a world title is never easy, and it is even more difficult when you are only 21 years old! Yutaka Niida (23-1-3) had won the WBA World minimumweight title in 2003 during the rematch against Noel Arambulet and in this fight he was defending his title for the eighth consecutive time! The opponent was the young Roman Gonzalez (born in 1987) that, for the first time, tried to win a world title. The perfect record of “El Chocolatito” Gonzalez spoke out, he had won all the 20 fighting including 18 by knockout; in fact also versus Niida, the Nicaraguan phenomenon knocked his opponent out. Review: 2008-07-26, the first fight between Cesar Canchila and Giovani Segura was a preliminary match of the main event Cotto vs Margarito, and both the fighting have won our four stars. Although belonging at the light flyweight division, both fighters had several Kos in their records, Cesar Canchila had won 26 times including 21 by knockout, while the Mexican Segura had 15 wins by ko in 20 fights (1 draw). In the second round Giovani Segura knocked down Canchila but at the end of the fight, valid for the interim WBA World light flyweight title, the winner is the Colombian. Watch the video!
Review: 2008-07-26, Cotto vs Margarito was one of the most exciting fights of 2008. Miguel Angel Cotto (32-0-0) was the favorite because he was still undefeated and defending for the fifth time his WBA World welterweight title. But Antonio Margarito (36-5-0) has always been one of those boxers who all try to avoid, he is a really tough fighter who hits very hard and who absorb any blow, in fact he had never suffered a defeat by ko (only Shane Mosley will win Margarito by ko, but in 2009). Margarito knocked down Cotto two times in the eleventh round and Cotto’s corner stopped the fight. (Wikipedia: Cotto’s loss to Margarito has since come under suspicion due to Margarito’s subsequent attempted use of illegal hand-wraps in a fight against Shane Mosley). Watch the video!
Review: 2008-12-11, it is not easy to see a match with high pace in the major categories of weight but, as in the case of Tomasz Adamek vs Steve Cunningham, when this happens, the fight results very spectacular. Cunningham (21-1-0) had won the IBF cruiserweight title in 2007 against Krzysztof Wlodarczyk and this was his second defense. Adamek (35-1-0) was therefore more experienced, but he tried for the first time the assault to a world title in the cruiserweight division. Adamek knocked down Cunningham three times and won the fight. Watch the video!
Review: 2008-12-06, the fight between Carl Froch and Jean Pascal, valid for the vacant WBC super middleweight title, was one of the best boxing fights of 2008. Both had a perfect record with no defeats, 23-0-0 for Carl Froch, 21-0-0 for Jean Pascal, and both had the first chance to win a world title. Watch the video!
Review: 2008-03-01, the third fight between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez should have been the decisive one, as both had won once in the previous two fighting. Like the second match between the two (in 2007), this one won the title of “Fight of the Year” (by Ring Magazine), even if for example we have preferred the fight between Casamayor and Katsidis or other 5-star fights of 2008. Rafael Marquez knocked down Vazquez in the fourth round but at the end of this balanced and spectacular fight the winner is “Magnifico” Vazquez. Watch the video!
Review: 2008-06-28, like many other fighting of Manny Pacquiao, the one against David Diaz was very nice, one of the best boxing fights of 2008. Manny Pacquiao, after winning a world title in three different categories (flyweight, super bantamweight and super featherweight), tried to win also the WBC lightweight title versus David Diaz. The difference in speed between the two boxers was huge, Diaz said after the match that he did not see the punches of Pacquiao, so the Filipino made him part of boxing’s history as the first Asian boxer to win four world titles in four weight classes! Review: 2011-05-14, the match between Chris Ngimbi and Willy Borrel was the best fight of “It’s Showtime Lyon” and also one of the best K-1 fights of 2011. After a good first round, in the second Ngimbi knocked down Borrel with a left hook and a few seconds later knocked out his opponent with a flying knee: devastating KO! In this fight Chris Ngimbi defended for the first time his “It’s Showtime world title” (70 kg max), which had won against Murat Direkçi in 2010. Watch the video!
Review: 2008-01-19, the title of the night was “Bring on the Titans”, in fact the fight between Roy Jones Jr and Felix Trinidad was a real dream match. Roy Jones Jr (51-4-0) fell below the 170 Lb, which has not happened since 1996, while for Trinidad (42-2-0) this was his first fight in the light heavyweight division. The fight was spectacular, Roy Jones Jr knocked down “Tito” Trinidad two times during the bout and won this battle. Watch the video!
