The demand for the match that didn’t happen is high, very high. The undisputed light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones vs former middleweight Chael Sonnen is what the fans want.
Dana White, UFC president, said: “If fans continue to ask for it, I would have to make it.”
Jones defended his belt for the fourth time on Saturday, submitting Vitor Belfort in the fourth round of the UFC 152 main event. He won but not dominated. In fact the champ visited the hospital early Sunday to have his right arm examined. The 25-year-old was told on Saturday he may have suffered nerve damage in his right bicep because the armbar attempt from Belfort during the first round of the fight, an armbar that could have changed the match result.
Sonnen is expected to face Forrest Griffin at UFC 155 in December. Dana White knows “The American Gangster” very well: “He’s going to call out Jones; there’s no doubt about it, everybody talks about him talking his way into fights, but you know that guy is showing up to fight and win. Chael comes to fight. He’ll fight anybody. I know that about him and it’s one of the things I respect about him.”
And Jones? He would like to face Dan Henderson (now stopped by a knee injury): “I feel like I have a little unfinished business to do with Dan Henderson. I would like to take on another great.”
Is it fear of Sonnen? Following the next statement it could be. He said it would have been a bad decision to “give a guy the opportunity of a lifetime,” referencing his decision to decline a fight with Sonnen (UFC 151).
