For Manny Pacquiao was the second fight in the featherweight division, he had won the first one against Serikzhan Yeshmagambetov (2003-03-15), while Barrera was fighting in this category since 2001 when he defeated Naseem Hamed. Manny Pacquiao vs Marco Antonio Barrera 1 was not valid for any world title but it was certainly one of the greatest boxing fights ever (instead their second fight, in 2007, was much less exciting). Erik “El Terrible” Morales had just lost his first fight and the WBC featherweight title against Marco Antonio Barrera, but he chose an opponent not very easy: Paulie Ayala. For Ayala was the first fight in the featherweight division but he was one of the strongest boxers of that time, who had lost only once (against Joichiro Tatsuyoshi in Japan) but who had already won several world titles in the bantam and super bantam division. Both boxers had the same age and also a perfect record with no defeats, 38-0-0 for Mosley e 33-0-0 for Forrest, but Vernon “The Viper” Forrest boasted a greater height (8 cm). Vernon Forrest vs Shane Mosley 1 was valid for the WBC welterweight title, won by “Sugar” Shane in 2000 when he fought against Oscar De La Hoya. After this first exciting fight between Vernon Forrest and Shane Mosley, it was organized a rematch in the same year but it was less spectacular. Watch the video!

Oscar De La Hoya had already lost two times, once against Shane Mosley and the other one with Felix Trinidad (who had also already won against Fernando Vargas). Both boxers had a very spectacular way to fight even if different, and therefore could only be an exciting fight. Watch the video!

Both boxers had in their record only one defeat, but the American had lost for a disqualification against Montell Griffin (in fact in the rematch Roy Jones Jr won by Ko in the first round), however, Woods was a solid fighter, younger than 3 years and had an advantage in terms of reach and height (8cm). Roy Jones Jr vs Clinton Woods was a real defense of the undisputed world champion of the light heavyweight division, in fact there were 7 titles at stake (WBF, WBC, IBF, WBA, IBO, IBA, NBA). Both boxers were undefeated and had a similar record, Guzman 17-0-0, while 18-0-0 for Oliva, but the former had already fought for international titles and outside his home country, instead Oliva had never fought outside Argentina, this match was his first time. Joan Guzman vs Fabio Daniel Oliva was valid for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title and it was an exciting fight with a quick knockout in the third round. Watch the video!

Lennox Lewis was the champion (WBC, IBF and IBO) and he had lost twice in his career (with Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman) but he always managed to take his revenge. Even Mike Tyson had already lost, once against Buster Douglas and twice with Evander Holyfield, Tyson’s career was already in decline, in fact he didn’t fight for a world title for five years. Thus, six months later, here we are are with Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward 2, which didn’t disappoint the expectations of the fans and was certainly another very exciting fight; this time Gatti managed to overturn the result… Watch the video!

Arturo Gatti, that was younger than 7 years, was one of the most beautiful boxers to see for his technique, while Micky Ward was a boxer that wanted to use his physical strength and had a jaw of iron. Someone has labeled Micky Ward vs Arturo Gatti 1 as “The Fight of the Century” and therefore we understand why after this fight they will face in two other fighting (Gatti vs Ward 2 six months later, and Gatti vs Ward 3 in 2003). 5 Star RatingReview: 2001-07-13, we had rated this fight four stars but after watching it again, thanks to the comments of “Cleming81” and “mattsnow81”, we have changed our rating in five (on February 6, 2015) because Micky Ward vs Emanuel Augustus was an absolute war thanks to a tremendous pace and some amazing exchanges in which both boxers showed huge heart (in the comments you can see how we rate it round by round).
Micky Ward, one of the most popular boxers despite not being very technical, entered this fight with a professional boxing record of 36-10-0 (27 knockouts) while his opponent, Emanuel Augustus Burton, had not an exceptional record, 24-17-4 (12 knockouts) and close his career with 38 victories, 34 defeats and 6 draws but he faced some of the best boxers in those years: John John Molina, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Carlos Wilfredo Vilches, David Diaz, Ruslan Provodnikov, etc. This bout has been the Ring Magazine fight of the year of 2001, but there were other three exciting battles in that year that we rated with five stars: De La Hoya vs Gatti, Wonjongkam vs Tunacao, Pacquiao vs Ledwaba.
